Coping in the Outside World
Phase 3 is the final phase living in the residential treatment program.
The person served will begin to practice skills outside of Residential Treatment with success; will take a leadership role in Residential Treatment; will transition to greater self-sufficiency and be able to cope with emotions; will have an increase in self-awareness and relationship skills; and will have attained the resources necessary for transitioning to the community.
Adoption of sober and adaptive coping strategies:
- Adaptive self-talk: seeing the connection between cognitions and actions and the ability to reframe self-talk to support positive decision making.
- Development of hobbies and interests: not related to using substances.
- Social networks and support: making positive and lasting connections with others.
- Regulating emotions: exercising self-soothing, calming and control of intense emotions and feelings.
- Managing stress: connecting levels of stress and ability to cope with well-being and staying sober.
- Symptom management: gaining sober strategies for managing health and mental health symptoms.
- System of meaning: connecting with a sense of purpose, higher power and / or sense of belonging.
- Identifying feelings: recognizing and naming feelings and connecting with thoughts and behaviors.
Engaging in positive parenting:
- Parental stress: understanding the nature of self-care and impact on parenting abilities.
- Strengths based parenting: learning how to identify strengths and abilities of children.
- Discipline effectively: setting and enforcing limits in a manner that increases mother / child bond, provides safety and security.
- Child development: understanding and knowledge of developmental milestones and how to effectively enhance skills of children.
- Attachment and nurturing: understand the nature of attachment and significance for the developing brain and health and well-being of child. Learn strategies for nurturing positive development.
- Safety: recognizing how to provide a safe and nurturing environment conducive to family life.
